5 Ways to Start Your Savings

5 Ways to Start Your Savings

1. Saving Trumps Investing Savvy

New savers face a lot of complex decisions all at once. Even if you know the choices in your 401(k) — this fund buys stocks, this one bonds — you have to decide how much risk to carry. You may worry about what would happen if you make a mistake. The options can be paralyzing.

Fortunately, investment choices don’t matter much yet. In the early phase, the amount you put into the market is small compared with how much you’ll invest over the decades.

So if you feel nervous about buying stocks before you’ve learned the ropes, fine. That’s the thinking behind a new retirement plan in the U.K. It bucks conventional financial wisdom by putting young investors in safe assets at first, with the goal of transitioning them to stock-centric portfolios with more growth potential.

In the U.S., default investments in 401(k)s often put young people almost entirely in equities. That can work too. According to Morningstar Investment Management, about 20% of your true total wealth, including future pay, is likely to be in financial assets at age 35. So even if you lose 30% in your 401(k), that’s an overall hit of less than 7%.

You can recover. Get started, and give yourself a year or two to learn to be an investor.

2. Boost Your Savings

Spend less to enjoy it more
Pumping up your savings doesn’t have to mean forgoing all the fun stuff you can do with money. Focus on using your dollars in the way most likely to make you happy.

A study in the Journal of Consumer Research found that when you are faced with a choice between the basic and deluxe versions of a product — that coffeemaker with the milk-frothing thingy and the one without — you are more likely to feel buyer’s remorse when you go high-end.

One reason: You’ll soon feel annoyed by the effort required to learn to use the extra bells and whistles.

Save as a team
You’ll build savings faster if you do so with your spouse. Good news: Research from the University of Missouri finds when one partner starts saving, the mate almost always gets on track too.

3. Invest Wisely
When you’re young, go Roth
Vanguard reports that more than half of 401(k) retirement plans it administers now offer a Roth option. Instead of getting a tax break when you put the money aside, as in most 401(k)s, savers in Roth plans get totally tax-free withdrawals in retirement.
“If you’re not yet in a high income tax bracket, the value of the upfront tax break isn’t as important,” says financial planner Michael Kitces. “Use those years to build tax-free retirement funds.”
Don’t miss out by default
Many employers make it easy to start 401(k) saving by signing up employees automatically. Yet according to Vanguard, a large administrator of 401(k)s,88% their clients’ plans set the default below the 6% you usually need to get the largest company match.
In other words, if you go with the flow, you may be leaving free money on the table.
Invest your windfalls
Put a $5,000 bonus (or a tax refund or gift) in a fund that earns a 7% return and you’ll have $9,800 in 10 years.

4. Think Index Funds

Build around three cheap funds
Planner Harold Evensky and finance prof Shaun Pfeiffer find that fund managers on average lost investors 1% per year after fees, relative to a cheap index fund.

5. Bank Online

Generally, aim to have an emergency fund equal to six months of expenses. It can cover you if you lose your job or have surprise costs like a big car repair. Online banks may be a bit less convenient than your local one, but for money you don’t tap every day they’re a better deal.
If you want checking
Ally Interest Checking pays a 0.25% yield on accounts under $15,000 and 0.65% for anything above that. (Some other savings accounts pay as little as .01%.)
For just savings
Barclays Online Savings pays 0.9%. No monthly fees or minimum.
For the medium term
High earners often need more than six months to replace a lost job. If you have cash for expenses beyond a year, GE Capital Retail Bank 12-month CD pays 1.05%

5 Ways to Start Your Day

Feeling tired? Exhausted? Lacking concentration and motivation?  Follow these top 5 ways to start your day on a high note from our Wellbeing Expert Sam Sargent.

Are you constantly exhausted and lacking motivation? Do you struggle to bounce out of bed with a spring your step?Whilst energy drinks, coffee, and pharmaceuticals may offer a quick short-term solution and "hit" of energy, they are not doing you, your loved ones or the planet any favors.
If you'd like to get off the roller coaster ride of energy highs and lows, it might be a good idea to start questioning the choices you’re making to see if they really are contributing to your happiness and state of wellbeing.
I used to be a coffee-a-day girl … nothing serious … just the usual morning "pick me up" that us Aussies do so well. Trust me, I’ve tried coffee all over the world, and nothing compares to the baristas in Australia. However, as time ticked by I started to notice that my morning love affair with coffee had somehow slipped away from me. What was once a beautiful romantic rendez-vous, had turned in to a needy and slightly psychotic obsession.
Like an addict desperately seeking my next high, coffee was the first thing I thought of upon waking. Not one to like this dependent and rather worrying feeling, I thought, wow … it’s time I gave this up, so that I can get back to that bouncing out of bed happy and vibrant me, and then enjoy my coffee as a sweet flirtation every once in a while.
Following are my top 5 tips that help me start my day off on a high note. When I put them in to regular practice they never fail to deliver a productive, creative and happy day.
I encourage you to challenge yourself for the next 30-days by making a conscious effort to implement these steps in to your everyday life, and take note of how you feel in 4 weeks' time.

1: START YOUR DAY WITH A QUESTION

As soon as you wake up, instead of stressing about what happened yesterday, or what might happen today, ask yourself a question, such as  “Who am I today, and what grand and glorious adventures can I create?” Don’t look for the answer. Simply be willing to allow whatever excitement and creativity comes your way. Starting your life, every day, with a fresh clean slate, allows you to let go of who you were yesterday, so that you don’t bring the pains, hurts, regrets or frustrations from yesterday in to today. It may sound silly. I may sound insane. But one thing I do promise is that a question always invites possibilities. Whereas a statement and/or fixed point-of-view does not.

2: MOVE YOUR BODY

No matter what you have going on, taking a moment to start your day with exercise will undoubtedly help set you up for a more vibrant and motivated day ahead. Whether it’s a 20 minute walk around the block. A run and swim at the beach. A yoga session at the studio or in your living room. A gym workout. A run in the park with the dog. Whatever it is, set the alarm clock 30- 60 minutes earlier and move your body. Our bodies love to move. They are designed to move. Exercise sends a rush of endorphins through the body, improves blood flow to the brain, and reduces stress levels, to name just a few benefits.

3: AROMATHERAPY

Transform your mundane morning shower into an uplifting sensory experience that awakens and stimulates your senses. Add 6 – 8 drops of organic essential oils such as peppermint, lemon and/or rosemary to the corner of your shower floor. Step in take a 5 minute warm shower. Allow the steam to infuse the essential oils within your shower environment. Close your eyes and take a moment to focus on your breathing. Take 3 deep breaths. With every inhale breathe in the natural and organic plant scents. With every exhale breathe out any stress.

4: DRY SKIN BRUSHING

We’ve all heard of dry skin brushing, but how many of us actually practice this quick and easy ritual every morning? It is a wonderful body treatment that not only promotes beautiful soft skin, but also helps to stimulate the lymphatic system and strengthen the immune system, thus helping all your body systems perform more efficiently. It’s an invigorating and awakening way to start the day, and truly worth the couple of minutes it takes each morning.

5: PLEASE LET GO OF YOUR JUDGMENTS

When getting ready in the mirror each morning, take a moment to become aware of your self-talk. Do you judge and criticize your body when getting dressed or facial features when applying makeup? It’s not a very kind thing to do, and neither is it very productive for stepping forward in to a happy and positive day. What if what you see as flaws are considered beautiful attributes by others? And why do we place so much significance about what one person thinks about physical attributes. Everyone is different and that is what makes us all so uniquely beautiful. Please stop judging yourself. Take all that energy and focus on nurturing yourself instead.
So, what can you be and do that will be a nurturing contribution to starting your day off on a high note? It’s all a matter of choice.

5 Steps to Get Ahead in Your Career

Want to get ahead at work? Forget about 'Me' - it's all about 'We'. Follow these 5 key steps to being a team player, and increase your career prospects in the process.

There’s no doubt that there’s a new kid on the block when it comes to workplace behaviour, particularly if you are looking to get promoted. To forge a successful path, it’s all about engaging with others and understanding that there truly is no ‘I’ team.
Sydney-based Janine GarnerJanine Garner, author of the new book From Me To We, believes there are 5 key things that employees can do to succeed as a team player and future-proof their career:

1. Be willing to share credit when credit is due

The temptation to take all the glory for your team’s success can be overwhelming when you have led a project. Understanding that everybody needs to be given accolades, no matter how insignificant their part in the eventual win may seem to have been is critical.

2. Be brave enough to share your weaknesses

Too often in the workplace, we see admitting a lack of knowledge or understanding as admitting to failure. It's actually a form of strength, because it shows our peers and our subordinates that we are willing to seek help and show vulnerability. This engenders trust, and encourages others in return to admit the same issues.

3. Appreciate the value of intellectual currency

Not everything is about the bottom line. Focusing inwards and seeing only your own KPIs and bonus targets means that you miss out on banking others’ knowledge. Skills are an increasingly valuable currency. Suggest to a team mate that you ‘swap’ a skill for a skill – teach each other something you previously had no knowledge of.

4. Stand up and be counted

Part of teamwork is the ability to change situations that are not acceptable. If you think that an idea could be bettered, or that your workplace has unacceptable conditions for members of your team, then don’t just sit there, start the change. Collaboration rather than isolation can be uncomfortable in the short term, but the long term rewards benefit the team.

5. Don’t be afraid to network

Yes, you may see it as a dirty word; but if you network effectively it can provide a truly collaborative workspace. Professional networks are essential to give support, encouragement and knowledge along the upwards progression path. Embrace like-minded thinkers who understand what you want to achieve and whom you want to support in kind.
Teamwork and collaboration is the only way to stabilise and stand firm in a shifting and unsteady work environment. The ‘Me’ thinking space doesn’t get you very far. Make the change to thinking ‘We’ instead, and flourish!
